Última semana viu o início da 2008/2009 Vendee Globe. 30 Capitães esquerda terra seca e escorregou para suas amarras última vez este ano. Para os britânicos entre nós poderá estar interessado em saber que os seus são 7 British navegação entre os hopefuls. Embora para um deles, Alex Thompson sobre Hugo Boss, a aventura acabou após apenas 3 dias seguintes uma collsion com uma embarcação de pesca pouco antes da corrida que causou danos substanciais, seguido pelo o que parece ser uma outra colisão durante a corrida de um objeto desconhecido abaixo da linha da água, que causou o barco a ser furos e tomar a água. Dito isto, há ainda muita da British contendores a seguir, incluindo Mike Golding whom I met at the Southampton Boat show this year.  I wish them all the very best of luck.

Se isso não foi suficiente, hoje a mais tenra Mike Perham ,com idade apenas 16 anos, cast off from Portsmouth on a voyage which could see him being the youngest yachtsman to sail single handed around the world.  The current record is held by an Australian who completed the journey at the age of 18.

Então, qual será o solitário capitaes enfrentam nesta viagem de cerca de 21,600 milhas. Havia dois principais destaques para mim. O primeiro era para ver Suhaili, o 32 foot Ketch construídas e navegado por Sir Robin Knox-Johnston na primeira vez sem parar circunavegação do globo. Dentre as centenas de barcos de fibra de vidro moldado, Suhaili's mão casco construído teca, Vencidos e imperfeita que me parecia mais deslumbrante do que eles todos. Eu não poderia resistir a minha mão correr ao longo dela casco, Um verdadeiro pedaço de história. Se me fosse dada a oportunidade de navegar sobre ela ou um moderno Open 60 Eu teria que ir para ir Suhaili. Dito isto quem pretenda me permitem uma tripulação Open 60 não deve ser adiada até que a observação

O segundo destaque foi sido dada uma oportunidade de falar brevemente a Mike Golding, the single handed Yachtsman who has sailed around the world several times.  He gave me some good advice on sponsorship which was very useful and crucial to my future plans.  Thanks again for that Mike.

Fiona minha esposa e filha Megan enjoyed it too. Megan's favourite bit, ela me diz, baleeira foi o simulador e um passeio de cerca de uma verdadeira classe Taymar baleeira. É muito sólido pedaço de kit, mas depois que você quer que seja. É bom saber que o RNLI have the best equipment to hand when pulling you out of the drink.

Katie Miller e seu barco ‘quente meias’ estavam lá como embaixador oficial ao Southampton Boat Show. Ela percorreu um longo caminho desde o seu solo circunavegação da Grã-Bretanha em 2006, culminando em um ano a quem foi adjudicado o Raymarine YJA Casal Sailor of the Year adjudicação. Com um bom resultado na bluQube 1000 Solo milhas corrida mais cedo este ano, ela tem qualificado para o 2009 Queijos, the Original Single Handed Trans-Atlantic Race.  It’s encouraging for me to see people attaining their dreams.

É um grande show e se luta para ver tudo isso em um dia. Mas se um dia é tudo que você tem sobressalentes como eu fiz,  then it’s still definately worth a visit.

Entre meus ‘para fazer’ lista é uma pequena rachadura no leme precisa investigar, uma revisão da elétrica, a new electric bilge pump plus a whole lot of little jobs. The other thing I’m keen to do is to run all lines back to the cockpit to minimise the amount of time I have to spend on deck. It’s a lot easier and safer to be able to trim the sails from the cockpit without the thrill a banzai dash above decks.
